Kitchen organization ideas on a budget for small kitchens

Go Commercial-Grade

This residential kitchen with commercial flair was designed in collaboration with architecture firm. The room was laid out to maximize prep space for cooking; visually, using three distinct varieties of engineered stone for the backsplash, the countertop and also the island topper heightened the sense of huge space. The neutral backdrop is broken with a touch of bright orange in the light fixtures — an easily changeable feature when you are in the mood for another colour.

Maximize Kitchen Storage

Kitchen storage is always an issue, especially for apartment dwellers or some homeowner whose kitchen is short on space. To redress this, manufacturing companies like Hafele are doubling up storage in new, custom kitchens with intelligent multi-tiered drawers.

Flexible Palette

"Keeping a kitchen unbiased lets you personalize it to reflect your fashion," says IKEA representative Mary Ann Barroso. "This RAMSJÖ kitchen in red-brown can be fit to be on trend with lavenders, purples and mauves — we've a kitchen in our showroom accessorized that way right now." The real treat in this conventional kitchen is the sudden light fixtures: IKEA's industrial-chic OTTAVA pendant lamps in aluminum, with colors made of mouth-blown glass.

Gray is the New White

Wondering what colour to paint your cabinets? The kitchen industry's leading producers say that while white cupboards continue to be tops, grey is the color they are betting on to break white's top place. This kitchen by Wellborn pairs soft gray cupboards with richly stained wood showcasing just one more kitchen tendency — combining cabinet colours is a trendy appearance that is holding powerful.

Save Money With a Look-Alike

Countertops continue to define a kitchen's style — but they do not have to be a budget-buster. This granite lookalike from Wilsonart is really laminate but unlike previous laminate countertops features a more realistic, larger rock pattern and round edge for a high-end granite look at a portion of the cost.

Choose Bold Fixtures

Bold colour isn't the only way to create excitement. Kitchen designers used these oversize light fixtures with black fabric shades from Tech Lighting to add some wow: "They Are about 2 feet in diameter and are somewhat larger than you would anticipate for the space," she says. "But they give a great sense of depth perception and create drama in a room with a typical low ceiling." The lavish cupboards are Poggenpohl's Marsh Oak Veneer with a rich close-black stain.

Timeless Farmhouse Flair

Kohler's apron-front cast-iron sinks come in a variety of colours, including new neutral tones Dune, a soft sandy color, a dark colour that pairs nicely with granite countertops, and Suede. "Apron-front sinks have not gone out of style," says interior designer Christine Baumann. "They add an ageless focal point to any kitchen. From a practical point of view, they're deep enough to hold big pots and platters for simpler cleanup — a shorter person may also gain from better access to the sink." Christine notes that because of their visual weight, apron-front sinks are best suited to moderate- size or large kitchens.

Contrast Light and Shadow

In exactly the same kitchen, Vasi selected Caesarstone "Blizzard" for the countertops and used a glass mosaic backsplash from Mixed Up Mosaics that combines milky white and eggplant colours with a mirrored tile. "Keeping the cabinets such a dark finish in a tiny space worries most homeowners due to the fact that they think it is going to make the kitchen look smaller," she says. "But it really creates drama, as long as the countertops and backsplashes are kept light or white to balance light and dark in the space.

New Colors for Quartz

Along with natural stone, quartz countertops continue to be tops. Caesarstone recently introduced a line of six neutral colors for its durable quartz countertops. Shown is the grayish-beige "Linen," whose subtle color gradation lends itself well to sleek modern designs. Nonporous and are immune to heat, quartz countertops are also resistant to spills and scrapes, making them a smart choice for busy cooks or families.

Classic Black and White Palette

As designs evolve the look may change, but the appeal of a black and white kitchen never expires. It's all around high comparison — this layout from IKEA juxtaposes white lacquer cabinets (from IKEA's LIDINGÖ line) and Absolute Black granite countertops, but it also profits from the tension between state and modern. Warm rustic hardwood floorings are an effective counterpoint to sleek cupboard fabrics.
